About the Business
A.R. Smith Jewellers was founded in the 1960s by Alan Smith, who After leaving school, trained as a watch repairer. As an apprentice he worked for Services Watch Co, they recognised his skill and leadership qualities and he soon became foreman of the site. With his sights set on running his own business he set up a simple market stall in Lutterworth town. After a lot of hard work and determination he opened his first shop, with his wife Carole, on George Street, Lutterworth in 1967. This shop specialised in watch, clock and jewellery repairs and also sold jewellery. The business went from strength to strength enabling Alan to open a second shop on Leicester Road, Blaby, in 1971. The Lutterworth shop was closed in the late 1970s allowing Alan to concentrate on the Blaby business. Alan sadly passed away in April 2009, at the age of 80, his wife Carole and their son Richard now continue to run the business.
